Jan. 4, 2014 – I saw Thurgood at Florida Studio Theater this evening. If you can still get a ticket do so. It is a very powerful, one man, ninety minute monologue loaded with the history of the “Negro” situation in the southern states of this country during the days before and after Supreme Court rulings on legal discrimination and “separate but equal” education for Blacks in the South. Separate was never equal.
I lived in Baltimore, in 1959-60, five years after the rulings occurred. I remember a Black man asking me permission to sit next to me on a bus. Such was the impact of our apartheid system. The “whites only” and “coloreds” signs were common in front of restaurants and drinking fountains. I worked for IBM on a proposal project for which experts from other areas were assembled. One was a Mr. Gray, an expert from D.C., Black. Before he arrived, the project leader announced to us, “Don’t invite Mr. Gray to lunch with you. He won’t be allowed in the restaurant. He will have brought his lunch with him.”
Do you think we’ve come very far from this today, even though laws are on the books? A recent attempt by a group of white people to join with some of the residents of Newtown to help stand against the criminal element there was met with criticism and openly bigoted statements about all Blacks are…….. We still have a way to go to for real equality and acceptance. As Humanists, perhaps we can add some energy towards correcting this issue.
